A lot of people have been complaining about PMS, which is short for Premenstrual Syndrome. Most of the time it's because women generally get emotional, moody or irritable for 'no reason' and guys bear the brunt of it.
Well, you know what? At least when women are moody and emotional over PMS, we have a valid reason and you can predict it cuz it follows our menstrual cycle. Guys, on the other hand, go all moody on us WITHOUT A VALID REASON and it's totally unpredictable. So you wanna complain about PMS? There! Guys are much worse and they can't even blame anything. Blek! ;(
Having said that, I found some interesting stuff about PMS =D (Note: 'interesting' is very subjective, and I have found that my sense of what is interesting differs greatly from the general public, hahaha) So, here's an extract from HowStuffWorks =)
PMS generally occurs between 7 to 14 days before menstruation (a woman's monthly bleeding, or "period") and then stops once menstruation begins. It can only occur during a woman's childbearing years -- after menopause, it stops.
Up to 40 percent of menstruating women experience symptoms of PMS [ref]. In most of these women, PMS is nothing more than an annoyance. But in about 5 percent of women, the symptoms are debilitating enough to interfere with daily life. [Ooh... debilitating... it's that serious 0.0]
There are more than 150 physical and psychological symptoms associated with PMS. [150!!! 0.0] These symptoms can vary from mild to severe, from person to person and from cycle to cycle.
General PMS symptoms include:
Psychological symptoms
- Mood changes (e.g., crying for no reason, depression, anxiety, anger, sadness or irritability) [Haha, now this sounds familiar...]
- Changes in mental functioning (inability to concentrate or remember) [Ahh! An excuse for not doing well in exams!! =p]
- Changes in sex drive (increased or decreased libido) [Ooh. 0.0]
Physical symptoms
- Upset stomach, diarrhea or constipation
- Fatigue [Hehehe, a brilliant excuse =p]
- Difficulty sleeping
- Headache
- Fluid retention/bloating
- Acne
- Breast tenderness
- Joint or muscle pain
- Cramping
- Food cravings (especially for carbohydrates, chocolate and other sweets) [Exactly!! =p]
- Weight gain [Hmm... Wonder if it was coincidence or really PMS =D ]
Unlike most people who blamed PMS for everything, I used to think PMS was just an excuse. Little did I expect I'd fall within that 40% (as mentioned above) or that I'd be experiencing it for myself =.= Anyway, if you found the symptoms interesting and wanna find out more, you can visit the link above =p
